The requirement to monitor the area surrounding the now-closed Hostim repository is set out in legislation and inspections are also performed at the request of the State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB). The inspection of the facility involves those activities defined by routine repository post-closure procedures (institutional control).
The monitoring programme for this repository includes the regular sampling of water from wells and the monitoring of boreholes in the area as well as that of surface water from the Berounka river and Loděnice stream. Samples are analysed by an accredited laboratory for the presence (volume activity) of selected radionuclides. In 2016, all the recorded measurements hovered around the minimum detection limit of the monitoring equipment, thus proving that there is no leakage of radionuclides from the stored waste.
