SÚRAO to take advantage of Finnish expert services in their final disposal project

SÚRAO, the Czech Radioactive Waste Repository Authority, will procure knowhow, which is accumulated during Posiva's final disposal project, for assessment, advisory and development work in the final disposal of radioactive waste in the Czech Republic.

The four-year service contract is worth EUR 2.75 million. The services will be mainly provided by Posiva's subsidiary, Posiva Solutions Oy, together with a Finnish engineering company Saanio & Riekkola Oy. Other suppliers in the project will be SKB International AB from Sweden and Geological Survey of Finland.

“The Czech Republic is now in the first phase of geological investigation on 7 preselected sites. By the year 2025 we should select the final locality for deep geological repository (DGR). We are looking forward for a fruitful cooperation, as we expect the advisory work from Finish experts mainly in the update of siting strategy, in the development of our disposal concept and DGR design and in improvement of the Safety Case of the disposal concept. Furthermore we expect support in environmental impact assessments and of course, we expect from the experts to help to facilitate the communication of the results to stakeholders and increase DGR acceptability”, Jiří Slovák, Director of SÚRAO.

This contract is a significant step in utilizing Finnish nuclear waste management expertise globally. Commercial exploitation of Posiva's R&D work in the ONKALO project is well underway. Earlier this year we have already agreed on cooperation on nuclear waste management expertise with China, Canada, South-Korea, Taiwan and Japan, Mika Pohjonen, Managing Director of Posiva Solutions, says.
