Mission and main tasks

Our mission as a state organisation is to ensure the safe disposal of radioactive waste in the Czech Republic in compliance with the requirements of nuclear safety and human and environmental protection.

We are governed by international agreements and recommendations relating to the uses of nuclear energy and ionising radiation adopted by the Czech Republic, the Czech Atomic Act and other domestic legislation.

We strive to maintain active and helpful cooperation with radioactive waste producers, communities in areas in which our facilities already are or potentially will be located and with the general public. Our activities are supervised by the Board of SÚRAO.

Responsibility

Everybody needs electricity, medical examinations and other services and products which cannot be provided without the use of radioactive materials. Currently, 4kg of radioactive waste can on average be allocated to each inhabitant of the Czech Republic. Our task is to ensure that the waste is safely managed without any adverse impact on the environment, the general public and future generations.

Dialogue

Without constructive dialogue with the general public, central and local government and individual communities in areas in which our facilities are or potentially will be located we would not be able to fulfil our mission. To this end we communicate with all stakeholders with respect, trust and understanding in order to find consensus and solutions which will be acceptable for all the parties concerned.

Safety

Our main task is to ensure the safe management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel with regard to which we are governed by the Atomic Act (on peaceful uses of nuclear energy and ionising radiation) and employ only those technologies which prevent the release of radioactive substances into the surrounding environment thus protecting both the general population and the environment.

Technology

We employ the latest available technologies for radioactive waste processing and isolation from the environment, for repository operation and radioactivity monitoring and measurement. We participate in the research and development of new technologies and enjoy close cooperation with both Czech and foreign organisations, laboratories, research institutes and universities.
